この物語の原作者のWilliam Shakespeare（1564－1616）は、エリザベス一世（在位:1558-1603）とジェイムズ一世（在位:1603-25）の時代に、英国のロンドンで活躍した劇作家である。 悲劇、喜劇、史劇、ロマンス劇などあらゆる分野で優れた作品を生み出しただけでなく、当時流行したソネット（14行詩）でも、見事な詩的才能を発揮している。

　代表作には、四大悲劇として知られる『ハムレット』、『マクベス』、『オセロー』、『リア王』の外に、『ジュリアス・シーザー』、『アントニーとクレオパトラ』や、『真夏の世の夢』、『十二夜』、『あらし』、それに『ロミオとジュリエット』などがある。

　『ロミオとジュリエット』は、1595－96年ごろに初演された悲劇で、16歳と14歳の若い恋人たちの短い愛と死を描いている。 場所はイタリアの北部の都市ベローナ。 そこに相争う名門の二家、モンタギュー家とキャプレット家があり、前者にはロミオという息子が、後者にはジュリエットという娘があった。

　二人は、ジュリエットの父が催した舞踏会で知り合い、恋に落ちる。 しかし、反目する両家は、その恋を育ててはくれない。 清純無垢な愛は、一途に燃え立って、悲劇的な結末へ走るほかはなかった。
